This tour will give fans two full albums each night, so even if they're playing 2 nights in the same city, it'll be a different show each night.
I'm Jenny, Conbon's sister, and I've forced Conbon to let me be her staff writer, because I have commitment issues with my own blog and I've spent my entire life leeching off her.

Now that we've gotten introductions out of the way, I want to tell you about the time we got the SHIP scared out of us at Queen Mary’s Dark Harbor. Sorry, we saw that phrase somewhere in a promo email and knew we needed to use it. For those of you who have never heard of it, Dark Harbor is an annual Halloween event that features scary mazes, live entertainment, and professional creepy people. It takes place on and outside a permanently docked cruise ship in Long Beach.

I've always been fascinated and scared ship-less of the Queen Mary because of all the stories about it being haunted that I heard growing up. I was actually a little excited to attend my high school prom because it was advertised like we would be able to go ghost hunting. It turns out, a dance there really just means you get your granola bar and gum taken away and you are confined to one banquet hall and a tiny adjacent room where students do karaoke with the chaperones. That was probably the scariest part.

Anyway, Conbon and I were fortunate enough to attend Queen Mary’s Dark Harbor media preview on its opening night this year. We started off at the RIP Lounge, which overlooks the Dark Harbor (they call it a "ghost-eye-view") and has a VIP bar with all-you-can-eat tacos. We were paid visits by various creepy characters, including a gypsy violinist. It's always scarier when they look at you but don't talk. The view was pretty cool, especially as the sun was setting and the park was coming alive.
There are seven mazes total, each featuring a ghost rumored to actually be haunting the Queen Mary. The newest maze, FEAST, is inspired by a not-so-popular chef who was shoved into his own oven aboard the ship during World War II, according to the OC Register. You get a chance to feel his last moments if you choose to take the shortcut and crawl through the oven.

We went through all the mazes and my favorites were Soulmate and Deadrise. Soulmate was maybe the most creepy one because the ghost story felt most realistic. The characters, donning death masks and fancy vintage clothes, were often wearing the same costumes as many of the stationary mannequins so you never knew who was real. And it’s was aboard the boat, which itself is spooky without needing to be decorated. There were pretty antiques strewn about, which made me want to take a closer look, but don’t do it, because Graceful Gale, who was a first-class passenger who disappeared in the 1930s is looking for her soulmate and she and her friends do not discriminate.

Deadrise was the most stress-/pee-inducing. The ghouls, comprised mostly of sailors and naval folk, were pretty confrontational. We met the Captain earlier in the RIP Lounge but he made another appearance here to lead his crew on a quest to make us cry. There were a lot of elements involved, including fire, fog, and water, so be careful not to slip when someone surprises you. The whole maze is kind of an assault on all your senses so you never know what to expect next. We hid behind an old man, thinking that maybe the crew would take it a little easier on him, but I think that made us magnets instead.

All the other mazes were pretty good too:
• INTREPID: Meet the mastermind, the creator and now the protector of the Queen Mary, Iron Master.
• CIRCUS: Step right up as the Ringmaster startles with disorienting illusions, maniacal magic acts, and a cadre of sideshow freaks.
• B340: Descend into the insidious mind of Samuel the Savage to face his worst nightmares.
• LULLABY: Hush Hush don’t cry; Scary Mary is just looking for her next playmate.
• PANIC 4D: As soon as you put on your 3D glasses, you are thrown in to this 4D virtual maze of a creepy house full of all kinds of gross stuff.

Other new experiences include the Chef's Meat Locker, which is a 7-degree ice bar where you don a fur coat or you'll freeze to death, and a secret hidden bar in one of the mazes (I think we found it and, probably so as not to cause a slipping hazard, they serve jello shots).

Some other attractions include:
• SIDESHOW: Step ‘backstage,’ rub elbows with resident freaks, take in a show or a drink at the secret bar
• CREEPY CABANAS: Host a private soiree, order a freak show, enjoy instant access to Sideshow & Swings. (Please note you are not safe from monsters up here, a mistake we made.)
• SINISTER SWINGS: Take a spin on the infamous Neverland Ranch Ride.
• MAINSTAGE: DJ spins between a variety of nightly entertainment shows, plus special guest performances.

Really, the whole space is a stage. There are performers walking around constantly, sneaking up on unsuspecting guests. This guy was my favorite. He walks around on stilts, holding a severed head, which he uses to kiss people on the face when they're not looking.

There is a whole show devoted to the guys who slide around on knee pads when you least expect it, sparks flying everywhere, called Slider Alley. It's pretty mesmerizing to watch how far these monsters can slide over and under each other.

I’ve been to most of the Halloween maze events in SoCal and I have to say that for the price, Dark Harbor is pretty worth it, but get there early to hit up as many mazes as you can because it gets packed really quickly. If you want to splurge, they do have an upgrade that gets you to the front of the lines.

Dark Harbor is going on through November 1, 2017. If you are looking for a deal, Goldstar is selling tickets from $9 to $19.
Har Mar Superstar opened for Afghan Whigs last Friday at, what I still think of as, The Henry Fonda. For me, Har Mar was the main act. He knew how to curate his setlist for the audience (mostly AW fans. I kind of hope they're called Whigs). His set was more toned down compared to last year when I saw him at The Echoplex where he headlined. That time, he played fan favorites, told stories, crowd surfed, danced to his heart's content, and even had Macaulay Culkin dancing on stage! This time, he leaned more heavily on his more recent albums Best Summer Ever and Bye Bye 17, which showcased his amazing voice. He started the night with the moody title track off his new EP Personal Boy and later debuted a new song, which sounded impressively polished even though he came up with it only a few days earlier. His set ended all too quickly with him belting out Lady You Shot Me, but he definitely gained some new fans as I overheard people praising his vocals.

He's got a few more tour dates with Afghan Whigs this month.
The newly installed IMAX with Laser projection system is a fantastic addition to the California Science Center. It has finally resolved one of the common issues that plague many regular 3D movies - the dullness of images viewed in stereoscopic 3D. With the new laser projection, the 3D images are bright and crisp; the colors are vibrant. On top of that, the 12-channel surround sound system provides a great audio boost to go with the beautiful visuals - the perfect combination to experience the many nature-themed films that the Science Center has to offer.
Amazon Adventure 3D follows the journey of naturalist Henry W. Bates into the Amazon. It was breathtaking, seeing the rainforest brought to life on the gigantic 7-story high screen.
Hurricane 3D, a documentary that tracks the beginning and end of an Atlantic hurricane, showcases both the beauty and destructive power of nature. The 12-channel surround sound especially shined during this film. It was so immersive I felt like I was in the eye of the storm.

Tips:

To get the best IMAX experience, definitely try to pick seats that are in the upper center rows. As with most 3D projections, the images on the edge of the screen tend to be harder on the eyes when one is seated on the side. The effect is even more pronounced when viewing 3D on an IMAX scale screen.

If you haven't yet, definitely swing by the space shuttle Endeavour special exhibit. For the low admission price of $2, you get to witness one of the greatest human achievements on display.

At least we got a small taste of her still-amazing-after-30-years voice at the show we attended on Saturday, where she was the surprise guest. She's an infinitely better singer than Sara Bareilles, who at least looked the part of the Little Mermaid, with her long, wavy tresses colored red halfway down and wearing a sea foam green dress. I even overheard a little girl yelling "Look, it's Ariel!"

What we didn't miss on Monday was Alan Menken's pre-show (in Monday's show he was replaced by Brad Kane - original voice of Aladdin - and Susan Egan - voice of Meg from Hercules). On piano, Menken performed a career retrospective with songs from Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, Pocahontas, Little Shop of Horrors, Newsies, and Enchanted, just to name a few. I almost teared up a little, listening to the man who penned so many soundtracks from Disney Animation's golden age, when not only were the films great, but so were all the songs. During that era, animated films saw success at the box office and on the radio.

The celebrity guests also impressed, from Rebel Wilson's sassy turn as Ursula (in an amazing black shimmery dress that I could definitely picture Ursula wearing) to Titus Burgess' exuberant performance (I didn't know he had originated the role of Sebastian in the Broadway show. No wonder he was so good!).

Sadly, John Stamos' badly placed microphone prevented us from getting the full experience of his song, Les Poissons, but, amazingly, the audience stayed respectfully quiet so that everyone could hear him. His hilarious stage antics made up for the misplacement of his microphone.

I hope the success of this show convinces Disney to have more of their animated films in concert. I'm hoping for Aladdin next summer. However, they really ought to do Beauty and the Beast to promote their new live action film.
When we bought the tickets, I wasn't sure what to expect. I was just excited to hear the Danny Elfman (hello every amazing Tim Burton movie soundtrack!) sing the NBC songs live. So, it was a treat to see and hear special guests like Paul Ruebens, Catherine O'Hara, and Ken Page (who sounds even better live, belting out Oogie Boogie's Song). Everyone sounded great, especially Danny Elfman, and it was fun to see how expressive they were on stage while performing during the movie. It was like getting a behind-the-scenes look at how the soundtrack was created.

Elfman must have been on a high from all the singing and audience cheering because he ended the night with the Oingo Boingo song, Dead Man's Party, which sounded unplanned, but was a wonderful surprise.

Another surprise was Sandy Cameron, who played violin during the intermission and was an absolute badass.

The Hollywood Bowl also made that Halloween Day extra fun with candy stations for kids, and adults, to trick-or-treat their way up to their seats and a costume contest before show. I loved seeing all the Tim Burton and Nightmare Before Christmas themed costumes.

Loved the palm trees and vertical lights on stage. It was like a luau at a rave.

Seeing Wing's reaction when she heard singer Dave Bayley's speaking voice for the first time. I guess it's hard to imagine such chocolatey vocals coming out of him.

The only white people I've ever seen dance like Bayley are ravers and DJs. It took some getting used to, but he was good and his moves were mesmerizing.

Their cover of Kanye's Love Lockdown is infinitely better than the original. Although, it did get me interested in Kanye's 808's & Heartbreak album. People complain about his voice on the album and all the auto-tuning, but it takes balls to sing on an album when you know your voice isn't great. I really like the concept, and you can't deny the songs are damn catchy.

I don't usually like the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, but Glass Animals' cover / mashup, Gold Lime, actually made them sound appealing.

Besides the odd dim sum din in the crowd during Cocoa Hooves (which was pretty rude if you ask me. Everyone was talking so loudly, I'm pretty sure the band noticed. But props to them for getting through the song without faltering), the rest of their set was solid. They turned The Wiltern into their own sexy Hawaiian dance club.
FYF was back again at Exposition Park, this time with a new walkway, an extra stage, and some new food options. Here are the highlights.

The New Walkway really cut down on the time it took to get from Main Stage to The Trees. This took about 7 minutes of walk time for me.

The Lines to get in were constantly moving, although a bit long on Day 1. Day 2 was much better. Still, getting in was a vast improvement over Day 1 last year.

It was a bit sad that FYF didn't sell out all their tickets, but I was glad it wasn't as packed as last year. Guess the previous year's logistics really did a number on this year's attendance.

ID Check was conveniently located right after security.

Perrier Greenhouse offered nice cold cans of sparkling water...and free bubbles.

BADBADNOTGOOD was an interesting choice for The Arena, but they sounded great live. I enjoyed their modern jazz version of hip hop.

Caught a few of Goldroom's songs at The Trees. Wish I had stayed for the entire set because he got me dancing even though I was sitting on the grass in the back. Till Sunrise was the perfect song to hear at sunset.

The Trees stage was fancier this year, which was really noticeable once the sun set.

On the way to the Flying Lotus DJ set, I got distracted by the lights and music of Shlohmo. His music paired really well with my tasty lavender and orange blossom donut (aka Joyce Lavender from Donut Friend. Love their punny band names btw).

The twice fried Korean chicken wings from Status Kuo were probably the messiest things you could eat at FYF, but they were also some of the tastiest. Note to SK: add moist towelettes to every order. We went through several napkins and a few moist towelettes that I luckily had.

Chet Faker's live show was much more energetic than his sometimes mellow songs on his albums. No Diggity attracted people to the stage and the rest of his set kept them there.

As a last minute replacement, Kanye West only had bright lights and smoke as his stage setup, but he still had the crowd going wild over every song. It was fun to see him try to do 10 hit songs in the last 10 minutes of his show. Surprise guest Rihanna sang with him from the pit and then later on stage.

Flume turned the Main Stage into a giant dance club. Did anyone find it strange that Lorde came up on stage to dance with him, but didn't actually sing? I was surprised that he was actually kind of polite and undouchey for a DJ. He kept thanking everyone after his songs and seemed genuinely excited about performing there.

It was my second time seeing Belle & Sebastian, but my first time actually being close enough to see them on stage (the last time I saw them was at Hollywood Bowl forever ago). I can't believe that even after 9 studio albums, they're still considered indie. Singer Stuart Murdoch was wearing a nautical shirt and a hat, which I feel like is the exact same thing he wore at Hollywood Bowl. I like to imagine he has a closet full of striped shirts. During The Stars of Track and Field, they showed this amazing old footage of the opening ceremony for the 1984 Summer Olympics that took place in the Coliseum at Exposition Park. Jetpack = epic.

D'Angelo & the Vanguard were having a sexy dance party at The Lawn stage. We could feel his James Brown-like energy all the way from the beer garden. He put on a great show including costume changes and him playing multiple instruments.

Morrissey sounded good live and I even got to hear a Smith's song, but I pretty much lost interest in the rest of his set after he launched into the preachy Meat is Murder and played the accompanying bloody animal slaughtering video. I do admire him for playing past his set time for his fans. And I hope people listened to him when he urged them not to vote for Trump.

Here are some of our favorite places from our road trip.

San Francisco

If you like cheese...

Cowgirl Creamery Sidekick Cafe & Milk Bar serves breakfast until 10:30am. We ate these very filling breakfast items:

Baked Egg Sandwich / Cheese Toasties

Baked Egg Sandwich with sauteed mushrooms, Gruyere & herbs. Added pancetta bacon
I had to get this because I love mushrooms. I almost questioned adding pancetta, but everyone thought I was crazy not to, so I did it and I definitely don't regret it.

Cheese Toasties - open-faced grilled cheese made with Calbot Clothbound Cheddar with caramelized onions & maple mustard
Not as small as the name implies.

Poached Egg on cheese grits
I thought this was a side item, but it was filling enough to be a meal.

Ferry Plaza Farmers Market takes place at the Ferry Building every Saturday (8am - 2pm) and Tuesday & Thursday (10am - 2pm). I wish we hadn't eaten so much for breakfast because some of the cheese stands were generous with their samples.

If you want some oysters without the long wait...

Hog Island Oyster Co. actually has a stand at the Ferry Plaza Farmers Market. You can order from their Raw Bar or even take some home!

If you like creative and tasty bar bites...

ABV has a standout food menu. What we ate:

Goose Salame / Kimchee Fritter

Goose Salame
I've never tried goose in the form of salami before and it was great. Glad it wasn't just the meat alone.

Kimchee Fritter
I thought this would be in the form of several small fritters, but I guess it was listed as a singular fritter, and it was...one big fritter.

Falafel Lamb Dog
So, I thought this was going to be a hot dog of some sort. I have to admit that I was disappointed when I saw it arrive in the form of two corn dogs because I dislike corn dogs, but to my surprise, it was delicious. Using falafel to replace the corn bread (which is what I hate about corn dogs) was genius. This was one of my favorite dishes here. I was actually craving it the rest of the night.

If you want good cocktails...

Gran Cobbler / Cool Runnings / Coffee Cup /
El Vampiro / Spanish Negroni

Forgery has been open for almost two months now. It's not really close to much, but don't let that deter you because the drinks are great and so are the bartenders. We drank:

Gran Cobbler - Gran Lusso Vermouth, raspberries, absinthe

Cool Runnings - Appleton VX Rum, Byrrh, grapefruit, nutmeg

Coffee Cup - Coffee-infused Bombay Gin, Pimm's, Thai chile, ginger ale

El Vampiro - Fidencio Unico Mezcal, Manzanilla Sherry, Creme de Cassis, salt
It was my cousin's birthday, so the bartender surprised him with his name in his cocktail!

Forged & Bound - Wild Turkey 101 Rye, Montenegro, Galliano Ristretto, green chartreuse, bitters
Yes, there was a snake in HC's drink.

If you like toast...

Trouble Coffee has a damn good cinnamon toast...and coffee, grapefruit juice, coconuts, and a small assortment of pastries. Hear the fascinating story behind the shop on This American Life.

Sonoma

If you want to pack a picnic...

Lazzini's Market has a great selection of made-to-order sandwiches, local wine and beer, and the kind of snacks that would make any Whole Foods customer happy. We got this to munch on with our wine later in the day:

The Godfather sandwich - hot BBQ tri-tip, pepper jack (HC swapped out the cheddar cheese), pepperoncini, red onions, BBQ sauce and mayonnaise on a soft French roll
The amazing smells coming from the BBQ grill outside may have been a factor in us ordering this sandwich, but I'm glad we did because the tri-tip was SO good. Definitely want to try their other BBQ items next time.

If you like bubblies...

Iron Horse Vineyards has a great collection of sparkling wines that you can enjoy while taking in their gorgeous view. My favorites wines were:

2010 Ocean Reserve - 100% Chardonnay
I usually hate Chardonnays on account of their butteriness (One time I had a Chardonnay that was so buttery it tasted like popcorn. Gross). I didn't even notice a hint of butter in this wine. $4 from the sale of each bottle goes to National Geographic's Ocean Initiative. I love Nat Geo photos and ocean photography, so this bottle was practically begging me to buy it.

2010 Rainbow Cuvée - 69% Pinot Noir, 31% Chardonnay
Its release celebrates diversity.

If you want to have wine by a stream...

Arista Winery has a peaceful Japanese garden along with other spaces where you can relax with your wine. We enjoyed their:

2014 Ferrington Vineyard Gewurztraminer, Anderson Valley

2013 Smokey Ridge Vineyard Zinfandel

If you want to impress someone...

Gary Farrell Winery's Terrace Tasting allows you to enjoy a stunning view of the Russian River Valley from their terrace with a wine flight and cheese pairing. If you can't get a reservation, the view from the tasting room is still impressive.

If you really love beer...

Russian River Brewing Co. has pretty much the biggest beer sampler I've ever seen in my life.

Carmel Valley

If you have a special event...

Holman Ranch* is popular for weddings, but they're also equipped to handle events like corporate retreats and relaxing getaways. We:

explored the wine cave and got to try some wines from the barrels. The cave naturally provides cool temperatures, which are effective for storing and aging wines.

dined at the restaurant they own, Will's Fargo Steakhouse. It reminded me of The Hitching Post II. Will's Fargo doesn't just serve steak, they also have:

French Onion Soup
In the past I've found this type of soup to be overly heavy on the cheese and extremely salty, but I really liked this version. Not too salty and the cheese was good. I actually wish I had more soup when I finished it.

Goat Cheese Ravioli, garlic, tomato, Parmesan cream sauce

Roasted Free Range Chicken, "Sauce Marchand de Vin", potato gratin, mixed salad
I wouldn't normally order chicken at a restaurant, but this one was actually pretty tasty and I liked having a break from the meat with some salad and potato.

Warm Truffle Cake, Holman Ranch olive oil ice cream
I overheard a guest raving about the ice cream on the way to the restaurant.

went to the game room and joined some other guests playing pool and throwing darts to the soundtrack of a jukebox. I can see why this room is known as the groom's favorite room.

Summer is ending, but you wouldn't know it in LA. During these continuous warm temps, I've been using SOL REPUBLIC Master Tracks XC headphones to put together an it-still-feels-like-summer playlist inspired by this year's FYF lineup. Enjoy!
Here's my best and worst of the festival:

High Notes:

The Lawn - my favorite stage had screens, cushy grass, and great sound no matter where you were. I saw some of the best performances at this stage.

Real restrooms - being able to use something other than porta potties made such a huge

Sports Arena

difference in my comfort and hydration levels.

Water - free bottle of water for anyone who took the Metro. Best. idea. ever.

Sports Arena - with colorful lights, disco balls, cool air, comfortable seating (the second day), good music, and nonstop dancing, the arena made me forget I was even at a festival, at least when I could get in.

Grimes - before FYF I felt meh about Grimes, but I kept hearing about how great she was live. After FYF, I am definitely a fan. Her show was surprisingly energetic and entertaining even though it was mostly her and her two dancers. Go was fantastic with her caped guest, Blood Diamonds.

Les Sins - if Wing hadn't recognized Toro Y Moi's Chaz Bundick, I would've skipped Les Sins. I'm glad I didn't. Not only was sitting in the Sports Arena a welcome relief to the heat, but it was actually a good set. I prefer the dance music he played over some of the electronic noises I typically hear from other DJs. I could hear a hint of Toro Y Moi in some of the songs, but in a good danceable way. He looked like he was enjoying himself as he was bobbing his head and dancing. Other DJs I saw that weekend just kept their heads down and looked like they were working.

Built to Spill - often cited as an influence for many of my favorite bands, I knew I had to see them play. I loved that they were quietly awesome. There was no cockiness, just amazing guitar solos, vocals (slightly huskier, but still good), drums... I only saw singer / guitarist Doug Martsch crack a brief smile once during Carry the Zero.

Haim - typically poppy with an R&B flavor, they were actually very rock 'n' roll live. They were all talented, playing not just one, but several instruments. Especially loved watching all three of them play drums on Let Me Go. Also, this was one of the rare times the sound was good on Main Stage.

The Strokes' set list - this was my first time seeing The Strokes. They weren't the best band that weekend, but they were better than their solo performances. They didn't really talk much, which was probably for the best because their banter from the day before was kind of weird. What was impressive was their set list. It was like traveling through time, starting off with Barely Legal, then touring all of their albums. Hearing the older songs transported me back to when I first heard them. So nostalgic. And I was excited I got to hear New York City Cops live.

Low Notes:

Lines - okay, I actually walked right into FYF the first day, but I felt bad for everyone stuck in the long line wrapped around the very large block. I don't even know why the long line even existed because once you entered, security and searches actually moved pretty fast and those lines were short. Luckily, this was adjusted the next day and everyone got in quickly.

Main Stage

Main Stage - it took 20 minutes to walk there from the farthest stage, The Lawn. This made me dread having to see anyone at Main Stage. With hardly any shade, it was located on hot asphalt and facing east, so you could barely see anything as the sun was setting. This was the only time I was glad to see tall people because I used them to block out the sun. Also, the sound was somewhat muffled compared to the other stages.

Future Islands - I don't deny Samuel T. Herring's enthusiasm and energy on stage. What I don't get is his need to use death metal growls in his synthpop songs. It was weird.

Julian Casablancas + the Voidz - he did sound better than the first time I heard him live, but it was a douche move to use the screens to show crappy computer screensavers instead of the actual performance. Not everyone can get close to the stage.

Daisy Dukes - how is it comfortable to have a wedgie so high you can see your butt hanging out? When did these short shorts become festival fashion? Ew.

People - the larger venue allowed for more people, and apparently more of the shoving, pushy, obnoxious kind. I thought standing off to the side of Main Stage would be safe, but no, there's no escape from jerks who think that after the band is several songs in is the best time to make their way to the front of the stage, especially through an already tight crowd.

Indoors, the sound is impressive, but switching to Outdoor Mode really boosts the acoustics, great for BBQs and pool parties. A fun feature is Heist Mode, which lets up to five people connect at the same time. It's beyond easy to pair phones and immediately start playing music. Plus the speaker lights up with different colors, so you know who's DJing.

Jack Black was a funny, energetic host and managed to recover quickly, and humorously, even when flubbing his lines. Has he ever been considered to host the Oscars?

The amazing Judith Hill singing Prince of Egypt's "When You Believe". Don't know how my friend's have never heard of this song, let alone the movie. It was all over the radio and featured two powerhouse singers (Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston)!

The USC Marching Band lined up on stage to perform on The Croods.

All the popular Dreamworks characters coming out on stage to dance to I Like to Move It. Jack Black shimmying with Po (it's like he's dancing with himself!) and Shrek was particularly amusing. Life-size Toothless was so adorable!

Perry So conducted the LA Philharmonic and looked unexpectedly young for someone so talented.

The concert brought together generations with classical pianist Rueibin Chen, beloved folk singer Song Zuying, and pop star Wang Leehom. The lineup made for a fun family activity.

Low Notes:

I know it was an outdoor concert, so you can bring whatever you want to eat, but stinky tofu definitely should not be one of them.

So this is just a personal low note, but seeing Wang Leehom play piano, violin, AND sing really made me wish I excelled at something, anything!

I've never seen so many Chinese people in one place outside of China. Having been to China, I know people don't seem to follow any traffic rules (or rules of courtesy in crowds). It was a pushy, rough herd of people. First time I've ever gotten stuck in the tunnel while exiting...

On the ride up to the Hollywood Bowl, Jennio and I were the youngest people on the shuttle...not accompanying a parent (it's so sweet that these kids took their moms to a concert). At the Bowl, we did see even younger people...working the event. I think it's safe to say that Barry Gibb draws an older crowd. So, I'm not quite sure how the opener, Jared & the Mill, was chosen. Don't get me wrong, they were good, but their Mumford & Sons sound would've been a better fit at an indie music festival. After reading their AZcentral interview, I was impressed to learn that Gibb selected them out of 70 acts. The man recognizes talent.
Barry Gibb

Barry Gibb with son, Stephen

When I went through a Bee Gees phase in my early college years, I never thought I would get to see any of them live, so I was excited when I heard Barry Gibb was touring and that there was a show at Hollywood Bowl (one of my favorite venues). I mostly knew of disco era Bee Gees, so I was pleasantly surprised by their pre-disco hits (such as Spicks and Specks) and collaborations (like the album Guilty they did with Barbra Streisand).

The concert was a family affair with a duet with his niece, Sammy Gibb (who I like to imagine is a punk rock jazz singer. Her voice was amazing) and a performance by his son, Stephen Gibb (who has a gritty voice fit for death metal).

Barry Gibb's voice, by the way, still sounds fantastic after all these years (zero old man voice). And he has a sense of humor. He put up a photo of him with Jimmy Fallon and Justin Timberlake on the Barry Gibb Talk Show skit (start at 4:22 to skip the weird Madonna part. I wish he had actually been on the show and had a sing off with Fallon). Then he went into Nights on Broadway. The only thing that could've improved the already outstanding performance was if he had started the song with the skit's lyrics or shown the end song from the video.

Photo via Dailymail

The tour was a wonderful way to pay tribute to his brothers. You could tell Gibb really missed them when he told stories while showing old family photos. He even did a duet with Robin on I Started a Joke. The video of Robin made it feel like he was there.

The show was a brilliant display of the Bee Gees' extraordinary musical career. I never knew they originated To Love Somebody. Everyone knows that song, but that night was the first time hearing the original. And Grease live was amazing. I didn't even realize Frankie Valli sang it, but I'm not surprised that Barry Gibb wrote it, definitely has his sound. So many of Bee Gees songs have been sampled and covered. Islands in the Stream was used in Ghetto Supastar, for instance. The only song missing from the concert was Emotion, one of my favorite songs (written for Samantha Sang and covered by Destiny's Child).
A lot has changed over the years (hello Wizarding World of Harry Potter!), but some things stayed the same (like my unwavering love for Epcot). Revisiting the places I went to as a teenager was even more fun as an adult, and part of the fun was discovering new food and drinks. Here are some of my favorites.

Food:

mug of Clam Chowder, Oyster Roll (Celebration Town Tavern) - the restaurant is located in Celebration, a town that thinks it's in New England and is so perfect and clean it's no surprise that it was developed by The Walt Disney Company. Now I've seen cups of chowder on menus before, but I've never had the soup come out in an actual cup. I have to say, I liked it. Having a handle made it easier to pick it up and scoop every last bit of clam chowder. It was creamy and hearty. I don't usually eat oyster crackers, but I really loved the saltine cracker flavored ones served here. The Oyster Roll was overflowing with delicious fried oysters on a delicate split top hot dog bun.

Chicken Filet Sandwich, Chili Tots (Moonlight Drive-In) - eating a somewhat disappointing burger the night before turned me off to burgers that day (even though Moonlight's burgers sounded great). The better-than-Chic-fil-A sandwich was ideal with its perfectly crispy and moist chicken. And how have I never had chili tots before? Loved it!

Braised Pork (Be Our Guest Restaurant, Magic Kingdom) - since we were unable to get dinner reservations, the quick service lunch was the next best thing. We ordered our dishes on a touchscreen, and our food magically (well by a homing beacon rose) found us. The 8-hour Braised Pork, chef's favorite, was extremely tender and the gravy was good on everything. The dishes were a bit inconsistent with one out of three having hardly any gravy, but the server was nice enough to bring out a whole bowl of gravy (yes, I was jealous!) just for Jennio. I was glad she shared some of it with us. With three elaborate dining rooms based on Beast's Castle, we couldn't stop ourselves from taking photos of everything.

Pineapple Float with Orange Vanilla Dole Whip Swirl (Aloha Isle, Magic Kingdom) - pretty much an Orange Julius Dole Whip in pineapple juice. Drool.... Wish Disneyland had this. Oddly, you're not allowed to bring in Dole Whips, or any food for that matter, into the Enchanted Tiki Room, which is one of my favorite pastimes at Disneyland.

Jennio holding Dole Whip float

Italian Chili Cheese Fries with Granma's Classic meatballs (Jimmy Meatballs Truck) - I feel like meatballs are the drunk food of the moment, so having them on top of fries with our Cigar City beers was perfection.

Drinks:

Butterbeer (Butterbeer Cart, Universal Studios' Islands of Adventure) - tastes like butterscotch whipped cream atop cream soda. It was so good, I had to have a second one before the night was over, regardless of the high sugar content. Worth it.

Real Pineapple Milkshake (Moonlight Drive-In) - like having an Orange Julius milkshake, but with pineapple and pineapple pieces. Mmmmmmm....

Schöfferhofer Grapefruit Beer (Sommerfest, Epcot) - refreshing for the warm Florida weather.

It smelled and tasted like whatever they pump through the air on Main Street. I regret not bringing a growler of this home.

Xperiment USA presents HDG (House Disco Garage) every Friday night at Riviera 31 Lounge in the Sofitel Hotel. I don't often hear this type of music at lounges, so I was curious when HC and I were invited to check out the residency of Trinidad Senolia. Unfortunately, Mateo Senolia, the other half of the DJ-duo, was unable to make it that night, so we only heard the sounds of Garth Trinidad. I don't listen to much EDM, but I did enjoy his set and their past mixes on SoundCloud, especially the one at Moonshadows.

Riviera 31 has changed my mind about lounges. In the past, I thought of them as places where the music is terrible, but not as terrible as the drinks. At the stylish Riviera 31, I couldn't stop myself from bobbing to the music, and who could resist ordering from a list of cocktails designed by famed Cocktail Chef Matthew Biancaniello? My most memorable drink of the night was the Byblos (Plymouth gin, local wild arugula, pressed lime juice, agave). The arugula was noticeable, but in a good way. HC's tagline for the cocktail: Detox while you tox. And try we did when HC, Jennio, and I were invited to preview the winter menu inspired by Maurice Sendak's Where the Wild Things Are.

Czech Mate - Becherovka, along with house made tamarind syrup and orange bitters. Served warm in a signature toddy glass.
Warms you up like a toddy should. Love the giant fancy mug.

The Snowbird - A blend of rums, accompanied by a hot chai latte. Garnished with cinnamon.
I can imagine drinking this by the fireplace.

Stirred:

From Prussia with Love - Blood Orange infused vodka, with Lillet Rouge and orange bitters.

Memphis Bound - Fighting Cock Bourbon, two kinds tinctures, and garnished with jalapeno bacon.
Makes me think of cowboys, especially with the use of Memphis barbecue bitters. I liked the spicy kick from garnish to drink. The only downside? One piece of bacon is never enough for me.

The Bull's Eye - Buffalo Trace Bourbon, Nocino, and Crème de Cassis.
Slightly sweetened Manhattan...that I can actually drink (since I'm not usually a fan of Manhattans).

Steamed Mussels, angry lady sauce, Chinese sausage -
Why don't more mussel dishes have Chinese sausage? It added a nice touch of sweetness. Broth was so good, we got extra bread rolls to sop it all up.

Fleur de Vigne - G'Vine Gin, lemon juice, Esprit de June liqueur, grenadine

The Diamond - G'Vine Gin, Esprit de June, Reagan's orange bitters
Everyone loved this

Vine 75 - G'Vine Gin, Esprit de June, lemon juice, Cremant Brut
A take on a French 75. Great for brunch.

Banjo - bourbon, Esprit de June, Reagan's orange bitters
HC asked for June with a dark spirit. A surprisingly good combination.

Not only does Esprit de June add a light touch of sweetness to cocktails, but it also tastes lovely on its own. Made with the vine-flowers of Ugni Blanc, Merlot,
and Cabernet Sauvignon, the liqueur does, as Natalie put it, taste like Paris.
It's exciting to see something as uncommon as a suitcase drum and even more exciting when the band that uses it does not suck. Sounding a little Johnny Cash and a little Mumford & Sons, the talented duo of Skin & Bones consisted of Peter Blackwelder on electric fiddle and Taylor Borsuk on guitar, vocals, and suitcase drum (yes, all at the same time!). Borsuk's husky voice eclipsed his youthful 21 years. Electric violin in a band is nothing new, but Blackwelder shredded his violin with solos meant for an electric guitar. Impressive. When I asked how they were introduced to the music of Johnny Cash (whom they covered that night), Blackwelder said with a smile, "We have very old parents."
HC, Wing, and I started out with "mimosas in Hermosa" (the theme that inspired us to go to the beach in the first place) at Scotty's on the Strand. Scotty's is a cute diner with a nice view of the beach and was the least fratty place (one pub offered 32oz mimosas! :x ) we could find. Oddly, a waiter started putting down new place settings before we even paid the bill. There were other empty tables around, so I didn't really understand the need to rush us out of there. Maybe it was because we only ordered mimosas and a plate of fried clams, which were decent, but made me wish we had ordered their hash browns instead.
We decided to do our own lobsterfest with Quality Seafood's great September Lobster Special. $18 for a 1/4 lb lobster, giant ear of sweet corn, large baked potato, and melted butter. If you're thirsty, you can even add $2 to get a Pabst tallboy! This is way more affordable than the lobsterfests I've been too AND you get bigger sides. This is the last weekend before the special ends, so check it out, especially if you missed all the other lobsterfests. Just make sure to go to the register where they sell the raw seafood. We made the mistake of waiting in the long line for cooked food. We just assumed the longest line would be for the affordable $18 lobster special. I was surprised people were totally unaware of the lobster deal.

After lunch, we quenched our thirst nearby at Naja's Place. With 88 beers on tap, it was hard to decide what to drink. Apparently, it gets rowdy after lunch. The bar was so crowded when we left, I almost ran into a girl dressed up as a cupcake. I didn't ask...
HC introduced us to Fishing with Dynamite. I loved the seaworthy decor and the artwork, as seen behind my refreshing Innocents Abroad cocktail (the sparkling cocktail w/ Starr, passion fruit, lavender & Thai basil reminded me of a passion fruit mimosa). In addition to our afternoon drink, we had a few "snacks"...

Snacks:

1/2 Dozen Peruvian Scallops - some of the best scallops I've ever had

Sampler Platter - each oyster on the bar. Wing and I raved about the Kiwi Cup and Coromandel oysters (both from New Zealand), so we were easily persuaded to order more. Also, loved the ponzu sauce. I want it with all my oysters from now on.

1/2 Dozen Kiwi Cup & Coromandel - I wanted to try the Kiwi Cup oyster as soon as I read the name. It turned out to be my favorite oyster off the sampler. It was crisp and clean. Wing loved the Coromandel, but I found it a bit salty, though not as salty as the Sweet Petite, which made my mouth pucker. It was not sweet, merely petite

Pretzel and Chocolate Bread Pudding - because HC can never leave without dessert. I'm not really a fan of bread pudding, but this dessert changed my mind with it's mixture of hot salted caramel and cold house made ice cream. Plus I love pretzels.

Scallops // Kiwi Cup // Bread Pudding

HC Recommended:
We were too full to try these since we did each have a whole lobster for lunch!

Maryland Blue Crab Cake - in - house dill pickles, whole grain mustard remoulade

Key Lime Pie - graham cracker crust and kaffir lime meringue

I see a lunch or dinner here in my future...

It was a fun beach hop, but due to scarce free parking, next time I would park at Manhattan Beach and then make my way over to the other beaches. However, if we stop at Fishing with Dynamite first, we might never make it to the other beaches.
Let's see how this goes.

First FYF:
Yep, even though this was the festival's 10th anniversary, it was my first time. I wasn't sure what to expect. It was kind of like a mini Coachella, with the comforts of home at the end of a long day, the benefits of great local eats, and the convenience of public transit (one of the worst things about Coachella is the mile hike to the entrance and the traffic you get stuck in trying to enter the parking lot).

Best Vegan Food:
The now closed Pure Luck Restaurant made an appearance at FYF in the form of a popup. It was nice to eat something at a festival and still feel somewhat healthy. Highly enjoyed their Jackfruit Burrito (jackfruit carnitas, beans, avocado, rice, salsa in a flour tortilla).

Biggest Merch Disappointment:
All the Ts were unisex. Even though the shirts weren't super expensive, I'm a girl, so it would've been nice to see some girly Ts or a tank top.

Best Bands to Add to a Summer Playlist:

Toro y Moi - smooth voice and silky jams. Loving some of the R&B tendencies on his new album Anything in Return.

Devendra Banhart - I like to add a slow song as an intermission in my mix tapes. Banhart would be it. Simple and soothing.

STRFKR - synthpop that made me want to dance from my blanket in the back even after a long tiring day.

Poolside - pleasurable pool pop you can bounce to. At the end of the show, Filip Nikolic was nice enough to jump down and sign some autographs and take pictures. Unfortunately, I was up front, but not close enough to the middle to get in on that action. :(

!!! - I've loved this band since college, so I was super excited to finally see them live...and they exceeded expectations. It was hard not to dance to their disco dance punk, it was so unbelievably catchy. And I loved the female singer (anyone know her name??) who dueted with him on a few songs. She was a white woman with the soulful voice of a black woman. Also, !!! was the perfect sunset band. By day, the stage was a funky pool party, by night, a discotheque.

Washed Out - I was afraid he would sound washed out and he did on certain songs. The set list was a strange mix of his usual bedroom rock and then some good, sped up, danceable versions of his songs. My favorite live song was Get Up. I mean, look at him, he was probably at his most excited during that song.

I wish he would put out a live album because he definitely sounds better with a full band. And surprise, his song Feel it All Around is the Portlandia theme song. The full length song is actually pretty good.

Holy Ghost! - I had heard one song before FYF and I liked it. I just thought I might check them out and then swing over to My Bloody Valentine. However, I found myself pretty close to the front before the booming bass and caught their electro pop infection that prevented me from standing still. It was an amazing way to end the last day of FYF.

Best Dancer:

Nic Offer of !!! somehow pulled off short shorts and had the moves to go with them. He got the fans riled up by bouncing all over the stage (I like when singers do more than just stand in one place) and jumping into the crowd. Despite the fact that he was dancing nonstop during his entire set (even hanging the mic around his neck to free his hands for some gyrating...and voguing), he never sounded out of breath. And how can anyone not get their groove on when he's dancing his ass off right in front of you? If you don't get motion sickness, check out some of his great moves here.

Best Line:
When photographers started leaving the !!! stage, Nic Offer yelled out, "Where you going? I'm only gonna get cuter!"

Favorite Stage:
I spent most of my weekend at the
Charlotte Stage (the stages were named after Sex and the City
characters. Have they done Ninja Turtles yet?). What? There was a ton
of great music there. Sunday, I was there for almost 8 hours straight,
taking a short break near the end of the night for a soda, then coming
back for more! That day, it was hard to leave the stage because we had
such a good spot right at the front!

Most Unexpected Things I Saw:

I used to listen to Les Savy Fav in college and decided to swing by the Miranda stage to check out a few songs. The songs were good, but the stage show got crazier and crazier. While vocalist Tim Harrington performed, he wore a fluorescent kaftan, removed it, did a belly roll, wet willied his own belly button, put on tube socks as gloves, ripped holes into those tube socks for his fingers, removed them, and then removed his pants. After he put on a silver gimp suit, including the mask (and managed to zip up most of the suit), and finished a song, I figured it was time for me to go.

Two girls dancing with a giant blowup penis wearing a cape during the break between !!! and Washed Out. Later at the Holy Ghost! show, the penis made an appearance on the big screen.

Most Out of Place Band at Charlotte Stage:
The punk rock No Age was oddly sandwiched between !!! and Poolside. They sounded like they should've been at the Miranda Stage instead, but maybe they were at Charlotte because of their surprisingly large fan base. I was at the front, but relieved I didn't get too close to the center where all the high school moshers were crowd surfing towards the front of the stage. Some good songs. I preferred the ones with Dean Spunt on drums.

Band I Regret Not Being in the Crowd for:
STRFKR made me want to dance from all the way in the back. And the next day I saw confetti on the floor that MUST have come from their crazy colorful show.

Shyest Singer:
It was amusing to see Solange grinding and sexy dancing on stage, and then shyly go to the mic and thank everyone for coming to see her instead of MGMT.

Best Food Outside FYF:
We decided to have a big lunch at Chego to last us the day at FYF. I mean, come on, look at that burger. It was so delicious!

Most Relaxing:
I got to enjoy Devendra Banhart's performance from a distance on a blanket.

Only Band I saw at Carrie Stage:
TV on the Radio played faster versions of their songs live. It didn't really sound like their albums, but it was still good.

Bands I Regret Missing:
Sadly, I couldn't make it to Beach House because I had such a good place up front for Washed Out. I'm glad I got to see Washed Out, but this is the second time I've missed Beach House :(

Best Bands of Saturday:

Toro y Moi

TV on the Radio

Best Bands of Sunday:

!!!

Holy Ghost!

Best Backdrop at a Festival:
